Meet Our Horses
|
Percherons are a breed of heavy draft-horses that originated in the Perche region of France. The breed probably stems from the Flemish “great horse” of the Middle Ages; modified by Arabian blood to develop a coach-horse type, it was changed again in the 19th century by introduction of draft-type blood to produce animals for heavy farm work. This breed did not become popular draft animals in the United States until after 1851. Before mechanization revolutionized farming, Percherons were widespread and influenced American agriculture more than any other draft breed.

Abraham (Abe)
Our horse, Abraham, is an extremely intelligent and very handsome 5 year old Percheron gelding. He is considered a "jumbo" Percheron since he is over 19 hands tall at his shoulders, which equates to a height of 6'4". Most Percherons are 16 to 17 hands high and weigh 1,900 to 2,100 pounds (860 to 950 kg).
Abraham is very calm and gentle with a friendly temperament. He loves people and does not know a stranger. Abe really loves pulling all the beautiful brides around in our new carriage (see below). |

You can see our special trailer in the above picture. We use an 8' tall trailer to haul him and his teammate, Rocky. Although their ears still touch the ceiling, they lower their heads a little and all is fine. |
Coming soon ... we'll be adding information about Rocky in the next few weeks.
